In summary, heated digesters are not always the best option for an animal feeding operation system to treat it’s manure. Here are some of the key red flags which should make the producer consider whether a digester is what is needed:

• The digester would be constructed because it would be a "good idea"

• Animal numbers are <300 mature milk cows, <500 sow farrow to finish, <1000 farrow to wean, or <3000 finished

• Cows bedded with sand

• Hogs are "all in-all out"

• Projected facility life is less than 10 years

• Water management is less than optimum

• Manure is "flushed"
